Stroke by stroke, mile by mile, and town by town, we are on the home stretch. Today was a well deserved rest day. We began the day celebrating Taz's birthday,(there was no ice cream) then we all just piddled around, relaxing, working on laundry and planning the next two weeks rides.
In the afternoon we rented two canoe's and paddled the beautiful lake here at Chicot State Park. The Mangrove like trees were full of cranes & egrets, some were covered with Spanish Moss and there were colorful blue and yellow flowers blooming profusely in large island like mounds everywhere. We were told that swimming was not allow because of alligators, but we did not see any.
One of the things that make this journey so worthwhile are the people we meet along the way. We pull into small towns on an average of each 20- 25 mile( closer here in the east). Most folks eye us curiously and are astounded when we tell them that we have ridden from San Diego and that we are headed to St Augustine. Many share bits of local lore with us and wish us the best.
We went to dinner and took in a movie several nights ago and the show was $5.00!! Yesterday afternoon on the way here we stopped at a small local Fair for hot dogs, pickles, snow cones and cotton candy. Small town America... it's great to see and the best way is from the seat of a bicycle!
