No really, that is Bob under the van. We got on the road pedaling at day light. When Karlie rode by us a few hours later there was a strange rubbing noise on the van. We called her and had her stop so we could check it out. A drill and a self tapping screw later a guard that had come loose was fixed. Thanks Bob. :) Then Karlie was on her way to find our next camp. We still had a lot of miles to go!

We are very near the boarder again. The fence is at the bottom of that mtn. We see a Boarder Patrol vehicle about every 10 mins on these back roads.

Some People!

These guys think they are the only game in town. They have no potable water, no showers and no flushing toilets, no walking your dogs, no getting in or on the water and too many more rules to list! They wanted to charge our crew over $80 to stay there! We left. A couple of miles down the road we found another camp...they charged us $8 total and they have flush toilets and a sink with running water in each the men's and women's room! Ahh, the luxuries we look forward to!

Las Cruses / Mesilla NM Camp

It seems we are right on the line of the two towns :)

Day 13 -- 62 miles

Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.8
Today we did over 90 miles to get ahead and stay ahead of our "friend"...a rude, self centered individual that just came in and took our camp over and got a lil creepy with his questions. After the second night of this we high tailed it out of Las Cruses this morning at first light...

This gentleman spoke no English. He and Basil conversed a little bit. We took pictures of them doing a crazy hand shake but he wanted his pic taken with Cindy!

Thoughts from Basil

I thought I'd share and few thoughts after another great day of cycling. We left Lake Caballo this morning and for all practical purposes, pacelined for 60 miles to Las Cruses NM where we will stay tonight. This was 60 mile of practically flat terrian, What a relief after climbing to 8200 feet yesterday. Bob pulled for most of the way. I'm guessing our average speed was near 20 mph. I know I hit 25 riding at the back of the line. He is a very strong rider. Taz is our leader and coach, and what a wonderful benefit to having her with her ability to work on the bikes and give advice on eating and drinking to be able to sustain ones sself on a trek like this. Still I refuse to drink a Mtn Dew! Cindi is our flat queen. She has well over 10 flats already. She is also one of the Pickle Juice Gang.Pickle juice you ask? We discovered that it makes a fine recovery drink. She also rides a mean Specicialized. I can't keep up with her!
The road today took us through miles of gorgeous pecan orchards, cotton fields and fields of chilies. The town of Hatch is the chilie capital of NM we were told. There were certainly a lot of them as we rode along. The route took us along the Rio Grand, which we crossed several times. It doesn't seem so grand at all as there is very little water in it. Tomorrow we will be in the Great State of Texas, but I hate how those Cowgirls got lucky last night. They could only kick field goals!!! Damn. Later, Basil

It's dark here in the Cabello Lake Camp and everyone except Basil and I are in bed already. I'm super stoked with today's ride performance by everyone! The gang are definitely getting stronger (or maybe I'm getting weaker?) and Basil was hanging right with us today!
It was a tough climb and long miles. Great job to the whole gang! I got caught up on the pics tonight and hopefully will get caught up on the captions and such tomorrow. Stay tuned! We know you are cause the hit counter is going up a couple hundred daily! Thanks!

Friggin Hill!

Checking out the profile and discovering there is one more FRIGGIN hill after the 8200ft climb. The rest of the ride every hill (really only one left besides some rollers into camp) was a friggin hill. :) All in fun of course.

We are in Silver City tonight. I'm struggling to get a good enough signal to get pics loaded up from the past two days and videos will not load at all! :( Very frustrating! We met some cool people and I can't get all the pics up!
The weather has been way cooler the past two days. What a relief! The sleeping is great! Last night we were at a remote camp on top of the mtn where we climbed up that 6200 feet no name pass. The camp had no water and the skeeters got a lil rough right at dark but the solitude was awesome. It got cool enough during the night for me to pull out the sleeping bag and the quiet were well worth it for the night. Cindy said she heard an elk bugling during the night. Otherwise the woods were very quiet. No bugs making noise and no birds. It was 53 wonderful degrees when we woke up. I did not see the highs for today...but we really did not need to. We did not run for shade every time we stopped so that tells me the highs prob never got over 90. We are looking for more of the same tomorrow as we climb up EMORY PASS. It will be the highest elevations of the whole trip.
